2009 Pancake Races

Usually on the annual Pancake Day Race page we show pictures of the races and those taking part.  Well this years edition is also a tribute to all the volunteers and sponsors who make these races possible and giving so much entertainment to all those watching and taking part.

Long before the races were due to start Maddy, Kate and Poly were busy stuffing the prize bags that were to be given to everyone taking part

Anne Milton MP and Tony Scott were busy again this year cooking nearly 300 pancakes.  They were lent a helping hand from Andrew Hodges leader of Guildford Borough Council

For the second year running Cllr Jennifer Jordan kindly started the event.  This year in her role as Mayor of Guildford

As usual Sandfield School got matters started with the first pancake race of 2009.  Thank you to Emily Ferris and helpers for bringing them and to Head Teacher Mrs. Curtis for letting them out.

View from a Guildhall window

How many volunteers does it take to work out who won?  Four it would appear.  Thanks to Sue Doughty, Richard Shenton, Anne Wright and Heather Bromham for helping out at the Finish Line

Every child who entered a race got a prize, courtesy of Waterstones Bookshop.  A big thank you to manager Jeff Wheeler for putting a smile on so many faces! While all the fun is going on outside, the registration staff are still hard at it.  Thank you Linda, Frances and Dotty.  The good looking chap on the right is Roland Sidwell who looks after the Guildhall and us.  Thanks Roland

The Eagle FM team celebrate winning The Albany Dining Room Cruise relay race. And TWM Solicitors celebrate winning the other popular relay The Farriers Chase. Not such good news for the locals was the heroic GBC team being pipped to the post by the team from Waverly Borough Council.  Well there's always next year.

GRAND MASTER of THE RACES

Architect and Master of the Guildford Pancake Races, Josh Goodwin, explains a point of fact to Race Organiser Gina Redpath.

Sue doesn't seem to quite understand the point, don't worry Sue, we often have that problem as well.

Josh makes sure that the races are run with the punctuality of a fine Swiss time piece.  One hates to think what chaos would ensue if it were not for his organisational skills.

Well done Josh for pulling off another great pancake event!

Just when the Womble thought he was in with a chance, Captain someone or another turned up.  No idea who he was or who was sponsoring him or even where he came from, he spoke with a thick (possibly Italian accent) and romped home.  Well Cap. if you're out there, give us a call, and let us know who you are.  Maybe next year we will have to have a handicap for over fit mascots.
Thanks go to Lionel (White Lion Walk), Specky (Guildford Spectrum) and Womble (Guildford Recycling) for making the day such fun!

GOOD FRIENDS
Charlie MacCaferty and Ben Dragon turn up looking very dapper for volunteer duty.
AND GOOD SPORTS

An making a real impact this year Cllr Andrew Hodges who, after entering the Council Challenge and Housewives Race, certainly deserved his cup of tea.

Long after the last race has been run and the last pancake eaten, the volunteers are still busy tidying up.
