Spike's Diary

2008
9th October Spike's second and third Awards
We were honoured this year to receive two awards from the Guildford Society.  One for the refurbishment of the Spike and the other was the People's Award, the citation for which reads:
"... for their refurbishment of the Spike as a community and heritage area.  This community-driven project, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, has returned this long-neglected, threatened historic building to public use for local people and visitors to Guildford, now with a vital education role."
This award, more than anything, is in recognition of all the volunteers and supporters who helped make the Spike what it is today.
18th July Heritage Centre Opening
Guildford MP Anne Milton accompanied by the mayor of Guildford Jennifer Jordan in the presence of many of the people involved with the project including representatives from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
12th July Spike's first Award
Spike's first award was from the Surrey Industrial History Group and a very prestigious award to have rating the Spike alongside other historic buildings such as Farnham Maltings, the Rodboro Buildings and Cobham Mill.  It was the 26th award given by the Group and was presented to John Redpath by Bob Bryson Chairman of SIHG.
13th March Residents Luncheon
Our first true community event since the January opening saw many long established residents, and those who had moved away, meeting up to chat over old times and their life living in Charlotteville.  This was a really great event and made all the hard work of re-establishing a community centre seem so much more worthwhile.

31st January Community Centre Opening

The Community Centre was opened by Pat Beasley and Martin Moss.  Martin had been one of the earliest supporters of a community centre at the Spike and his positive attitude and daring quotes ("You can make a community centre in any building") kept us going.
Pat is one of our long distance supporters from the Midlands and one the scissors to open the Spike at the Burns night in 2006.

8th & 9th September Heritage Open Day
Bigger and Better than Ever!

And this group had just finished their tour - still looking happy!  That's good.

We had a record turn out this year with over 1,000 visitors evenly split over the two days.  At one point we had four tours running at the same time.  One reason, (other than the Spike being such a fascinating building), for the huge turn out was the regular stops made by the Shuttle Bus.  It would often disgorge 20 or more visitors at a time.  A great success and thank you to Guildford Borough Council for allowing the detour.
Now, if only it could remain on divert throughout the year.

23rd August The Millenium Volunteers
A big thank you to Phil Evans and his team of YMCA volunteers who came to make a start on the secluded garden.  All went well in the morning and the team made a good start getting rid of some very polluted soil.  New topsoil was then mixed in with compost and the bed was finished with genuine Victorian rope twist clay edging tiles.

And then it rained and rained, but the volunteers pressed on until the job was done leaving a very happy flower bed ready for planting!

17th August Charles Russell LLP

Guildford Solicitors Charles Russell LLP came along to help with painting some of the heritage cells and, it would appear, also themselves.

A really lovely crowd - thanks for your help!

23rd July Spanish Students enjoy a BBQ

One of the little known businesses of Guildford are its language courses and Guildford English, one of the longest  established of the Guildford based courses, entertained their students and host families to a barbeque prior to the prize giving and thank you ceremony.  The Spike coped very well with approximately 140 guests!
21st July 1st Birthday Party (50th actually)
The first party to be held at the Spike was for Josh Goodwin's big one.  In all around 60-70 guest of all ages attended.  Weather was reasonable, only light rain, but that didn't stop the children having a good time in the Spike playground.

18th July

Trustees Meeting

The first Board Meeting at the Spike of the directors of the Charlotteville Jubilee Trust.  Trying to look serious are from L to R:

John Redpath, Gina Redpath, Charles Turton, Josh Goodwin, Graham Long and Philip Benson.

17th June On the Toby

We followed the Dorking to Guildford route once again.  With the glorious weather the event was another great success.  More interesting for being a bit of an obstacle course especially at this river crossing just outside Dorking.

This year Sharon Ward was raising money for the Spike Project with matched sponsorship from Barclays Bank.

Thank you Barclays!

21st January They're back!

This weekend saw a lot of hard work from Naturalight's riggers.  The lanterns arrived on the stormiest day in 17 years and by the weekend, when this shot was taken, temperatures were heading for sub zero, and it's cold on that roof.
Thanks lads for keeping us on schedule!

15th November English Heritage Choose the Spike
English Heritage chose the Spike as the heritage site to launch their annual report for the South East called Heritage Counts.  The event was attended by press and a television crew from Meridian Thames Valley.  It was great that our community and heritage project was chosen to represent this years EH theme which was based on the role communities play by caring for and engaging in England's heritage - was there a better site? Never!

EH regional director Andy Brown put to hard labour in one of the recently repaired stone breaking cells.

9th&10th September

Heritage Open Day

The Spike is a star attraction

For the first time in two years the Spike was back in the official tour brochure and what a difference it made.  In 2005 we had roughly 50 visitors over the two days, this year we had more than 350.   Many were first time visitors but there were also some familiar faces from last year who had come back to see how we were getting on.

Only certain parts of the building were open due to the building works but all visitors saw enough to realise the importance of the building with regard to our heritage.

Queuing to get in at times we had three tours happening simultaneously!

3rd July At Last the builders have turned up!
Lampard and Partners started on site with a good weeding session that was carried out at great speed by their more than enthusiastic Polish division.

Only 45 weeks to go!

27th June  Spike's first rock video

Heavy Metal band Zero Cipher spent the day recording their new video called 'It's No Secret' which is a track on their all new 'Diary of a Sadist' album.  The picture above shows three of the band with the make up girls (they don't really look like that).  On the left is Barnaby Whattingham the other two I can't quite make out behind all the finely applied make up but its either Duncan and Ryan, Ryan and Joe or Joe and Duncan.

And by the way boys, the Spike's not a Maternity Ward its a Casual Ward

We wish the band every success with their new album and look forward to the royalties pouring in!

19th May  Dr. Judith Carmel-Arthur and her class

Dr Judith Carmel Arthur and students from her History Course at Hillcroft Women's College in Surbiton visited the Spike and had the full tour of the building.  A very enthusiastic group who were a pleasure to show round.

14th May

A very cold and windy day but a good warm feeling inside.

15th November

Visit by Matthew Alexander and his class

We were honoured that the curator of Guildford Museum asked to show his further education class the Spike to aid in their studies of the Poor Laws.  A very enjoyable tour with a very interested and knowledgeable group of people.

3rd October

Visit from Holy Trinity School Teachers

We will continue to encourage easy access and use of the Spike for everyone.  We plan to allow the local Primary Schools to use it freely when it is available.  Today a group of 15 teachers came on a fact finding visit to see what the Spike has to offer.

10th September

Although not officially on the circuit this year we had the Spike open on both the Saturday and Sunday.  In total we had some 50 visitors, many saying they were looking forward to coming back to see the Spike once we had refurbished it

1st September

The crucial Heritage Lottery Fund meeting where the Spike was granted £1.195M that will secure its future as a Community and Heritage Centre.
